A TREACHEROUS stretch of road needs to be lit up to prevent more deaths, it has been claimed.

Blackrod Town Council is calling for lighting on the A6, following a fatal road crash.

Last week, Barry Britton, aged 48, of Highfield Road in Adlington was killed in an horrific accident which involved a double decker bus and three cars.

At the town council’s meeting on Monday night, which was the first meeting since the fatal smash, councillors called for action to be taken to prevent further tragedies.

Cllr Pat Senior said: “The A6 came under fire last week because of a tragic accident where a man lost his life.

“This part of the A6 is a bad spot and there is no lighting. Something needs to be done about this.”

The accident happened at 7.20am on Tuesday. It was dark and it is thought the road had been covered in black ice.

The stretch between Grimesford Lane and Station Road is regularly covered with a layer of surface water in bad weather.

Cllr Pat Barrow said: “We have asked for this many times and it is the only stretch of the A6 that is not lit.

“We have also asked about the water and for the drains to be looked into. With the road being so wet, any grit that was spread was probably washed away.

“There is no follow-up to work that has been done and now a life has been lost.”

Cllr Graham Farrington said: “The work that was done was only temporary and sand bags have been used to keep water off the road.

“Where else in the country does that happen? It is like a river sometimes.”

Following the meeting Cllr Nick Peel, Bolton Council’s executive member for environment, said: “This is something we would look into.

“I’m not sure that poor visibility was the cause of the accident but the council is carrying out an investigation, looking at all the factors and what can be done to improve safety.”
