ONLY four of the Sam Ashworth Trophy second round games survived the cold weather and, for a change, there were no real shocks in the BSF Over-35s League competition.
Peake Fitness booked their place in the last eight, but needed penalties to see off Dobbies A and progress to the quarter-finals.
A Chris Garvey goal put Peake in front before their keeper’s attempted clearance struck Phil Hutchinson and ended up in the back of the net for Dobbies’ equaliser.
The game finished 1-1 and neither team could break the deadlock in extra time. Peake held their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties.
Walkden Cricket comfortably saw off Chorlton Vets 5-1 to be in the hat for Friday’s draw.
Two goals each for Tony Briffa and Des Morris did most of the damage and Phil Gaskell chipped in with one while Nole Coleman replied for Chorlton.
The Bay Mare Strollers beat Ram United 2-1, Ram having veteran keeper John Duxbury to thank for avoiding a heavier defeat.
The Strollers started the better team and a John Ashton goal put them in front in the first half.
It could have been three or four before half-time but for the heroics of the Rams keeper.
The second half was much closer and it took an Al Thomas deflected shot to beat Duxbury and put the Bay Mare 2-0 up.
Ram then started to play some neat football and Paul Millard rolled back the years with a weaving run past three defenders before slotting the ball into the corner to set up a nervous last 15 minutes, in which Bay Mare held on to book their place in the last eight.
The Salford Waggon join them in the quarters after a 4-2 win over Harwood Grey Mare. They are the only team through so far who are not in the top division.
Two goals from Fagan and one each for Harrison and Brooke did the damage for Waggon, and although Harwood put up a gallant fight, Salford were just too strong.
