ASTLEY & Tyldesley’s juniors competed in the British Indoor Cycle Speedway Championships at Cheslyn Hay Leisure Centre, Walsall, on Saturday.
This was each riders’ debut in indoor competition and first year riders Ben Dickenson and Luke Jamson showed impressive ability and determination.
In the junior team semi-final Wednesfield and Sandwell easily qualified for the final, while A&T had a close tussle with Norfolk side Hethersett for third place.
A&T led rivals Hethersett going into the last race, but the Norfolk side took the points in that race to pip A&T by one point.
Wednesfield went on to win the final, with Sandwell runners-up.
Luke Jamson qualified for the under-16s individual final and, although he found points hard to come by, he impressed when reaching the final at his first attempt.
Joel Partington fell while leading his last qualifying race in the under-13s competition, and that was enough to eliminate him at the qualification stage.
