A DAD is appealing for help in fundraising for a specialist brain and spinal injury centre.
Andy Golightly, from Bromley Cross, uses a wheelchair after he lost the use of his legs seven years ago, as recurring tumours damaged his spine.
He gave up his job as a primary school teacher and now works for BASIC — the Brain and Spinal Injury Centre — as community fundraiser. He recently took part in the Great North Run and New York marathon as a wheelchair athlete, raising £3,500 for the centre, based in Salford.
Now he is looking for more volunteers to join him for next year’s events, to raise money for the charity’s 10-year anniversary cafe project.
Mr Golightly, aged 42, said: “Whether you’re a runner, a wheelie or a walker, there is a place for everyone to join in and help us raise money for BASIC. We will help you get involved, providing all the advice and kit needed to raise money.
“BASIC was there for me when I needed them most, bringing back my self confidence and self esteem, so the least I can do is try to put something back. This year we are looking to raise more than £55,000 to create a community cafe and training facility, Food for thought.”
He added: “There is nowhere else in the country that offers such a variety of services as BASIC to this client group all under one roof.”
Anyone interested in finding out more about BASIC and raising money for the charity should contact Mr Golightly on 0161 789 5176.
