IN the first round of the Divisional Cups many teams received a bye but, some of the matches played recorded a number of interesting results.
In the Brian Gittins Cup for Premier and Division One teams, First Division side Ladybridge A utilised their three points start to beat Premier Division Heaton A 6-3.
Their three players Alex Waring, Craig Bradbury and Eddie Simon scored three wins with Paul Ward unbeaten for Heaton.
Two matches which were closely contested by Division Two teams both produced a 5-4 scoreline. Nomads B, on two start, came out on top at Withins A.
From an early 3-1 lead they scraped two sets from the next five including the last set of the night to clinch their win. Gareth Palmer and Keith Dale won two each and John Davis one for the winners, and Stuart Wallis and Paul Bradwood two apiece for the losers.
In the other match Hilton C on two start visited top team Burning Desire B. Burning Desire won the opening set after which the Hilton team moved in to top gear winning the following five to clinch the win, before losing the final three. Two wins by Dave Andrews and Ian Wheeldon plus one by Alan Tomlinson for the winners, and two wins by Dave Smith and one apiece for Ben Armstrong and Kim Barnard for the losers.
Dave Scowcroft scored three wins for Heaton C who received two start from Nomads A but, after one of the Heaton team was injured and unable to play two of his sets the match was virtually over, Nomads running out 5-4 winners. Little Lever B with two points start beat fellow Premier Division team Ramsbottom B 5-4.
From 3-1 down in the early stages of the match they recovered strongly to clinch their win which featured two successes by Ian Lansdale and Roy Costello plus one by John Hutchinson, Josh Bleakley was unbeaten for Ramsbottom.
Paul Tatlock scored the three wins for Little lever C who were beaten 5-3 by visitors Hilton Tameside despite receiving three points start. Two wins each for Jake Shaw and Caroline Hallows and one for Phill Biggs for the winners. Heaton D went through with a walk-over.
In the George Yates Shield two teams from Division Two and three from the Third Division won through to Round Two.
Hilton E on two points start surprisingly beat fellow division two team Heaton F 9-0 with trebles by Alan Bradshaw, Tony Eardley and Gary Hilton. Withins B gave visitors BEN B from division three two points start and ran out 6-3 winners. Steven Hall scored three wins Stuart McCaig two and Debbie Wilson one for Withins, Alan Hibbert two and Mike Aspinall one for BEN.
The three top teams in Division Three all won through to round two.
Top team Ladybridge B with a two points start beat second division Little Lever D 6-3. John Birchall three wins Brian Greenhalgh two and sub Andy Sculley one for Ladybridge.
Two wins by Mark Martin and one by Alan Lansdale for Little Lever. Coburg won through 8-1 against a two man Hilton H team.
Played from scratch Hilton G scored a 7-2 win over their I team which featured three wins by Tim Fields two by brother Matthew and two by Brian Young. Malcolm Wilcock and Tony Mason winning one each for the losers.
Only two matches played in round one of the Ron Hindle Memorial Trophy for Division Four teams. Heaton G with two points start ran out 5-3 winners on their visit to St Paul’s Peel. After trailing by three sets to two the Heaton team won the next three to give them the victory. Colin Roberts and Phil Beales won two apiece and Dave Jones one for Hilton while Mick Murray scored two wins and Rory McIntyre one for St Pauls. Hilton I gave the improving Hilton L junior team two points start but ran out 8-1 winners.
