25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, November 28, 1983 Eighty homes were left without electricity this morning after a mystery explosion at Breightmet.
And today gas and electric engineers were still trying to trace the cause of the blast which happened at about 1 a.m. outside the Bull's Head public house in Bury Road.
50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, November 28, 1958 Mrs. Winifred Bosworth's home at 113, Summer-st., Horwich, was in a state of siege to-day after an unwelcome visitor, a black and white cat, had left soot marks all over her sitting room furniture and then disappeared up the chimney where it had evidently been hiding.
Furniture was piled up and covered with paper in case the intruder made another descent, but the cat showed no signs of moving.
100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, November 28, 1908 A number of cases of housebreaking have recently been occupying the attention of the Borough Police, and this morning another burglary was reported to them. When the assistants at the Astley Bridge Branch Library went there this morning they found that the place had been entered during the night. The entrance had, it is thought, been effected from the back premises, and the burglar had progressed from one room to another by breaking the glass in the dividing doors.
