With credit crunch gloom, many of the workforce off with flu and impending festive duties, it’s no wonder the office is feeling a bit dreary these days. This is where fashion can help Ditch the habit of crawling out of bed and reaching for the closest chunky knit, and give yourself something to get up for.
Office wear has been the talk of many fashion bibles, and this year is no different. All you need to do is stick with a classic look and add a few ruffles, bows and sparkles and you’ll have the trend down to a T.
Take this pencil skirt — River Island has twisted the theme and added these lush ruffles to the bottom of the skirt. Still classic black, you can get away with it in the boardroom, but the feminine bow at the front will prevent you going over the top trying to fit in with the men. At £34.99 it’s worth splashing the cash on a wardrobe staple like this, and the flattering hemline will ensure you keep that 1950s hourglass look.
To cheer everyone up a bit in the office, why not go for a splash of colour and choose purple — all over the catwalks and the high street. This pussy-bow blouse from Next is to die for. Fitted to give a better shape and is thick enough for keep you warm — we’ve all been there in chiffon when the heating goes off and you’re working late into the night. The open neckline will flatter any bust, but stick a streamlined camisole underneath if you’ve got a heavier chest. At £28 it won’t break the bank and will see you right through to 2009.
Let’s face it, a shirt is not going to keep you from the bitter winds once the winter sets in, so you’re going to need to cover up. And it’s back to River Island and an alternative to the traditional cardigan, a cape. At £54.99 it’s high-end budget, but the freedom it gives your arms will be worth it. You’ll still be a whizz at the photocopying and you’ll be able to type and answer the phone without problem. The soft almost felt-like material will keep you snuggly warm when all you really want is your duvet.
Now it’s time to accessorise. We are not going to abandon our heels just because there is a bit of rain, snow, sleet or mush you might slip on. But we do need to rethink the size of our skyscrapers. Cone-shaped heels are best in this case and we have the perfect pair. These black-and-tan brogues will work perfectly with this outfit. At £35 from New Look they are affordable yet stylish and you’re not likely to break your neck walking to work. Better safe than sorry? Put on a pair of pumps until you get into the comfort zone of the office. Don’t worry about the colour clash of tan and black as the handbag option is sure to solve that dilemma.
This mock croc patent bag comes in black or tan, so buy both versions and alternate. This bag is uber stylish and is another classic to see you through all the seasons. A snip at only £35 from Faith, the double straps make it sturdy enough not to snap and the briefcase feel makes it smart enough for the office.
Top tip: Head held high and a little wiggle (I said little, don’t start sashaying! The office is not a catwalk, nor a path to the bar, so keep it subtle), is all you need to carry off this look. A little confidence goes a long way.
