YOU can tell England are on a winning streak by the deafening silence over Fabio Capello’s nationality.

Just by way of a reminder, our national coach is Italian and there were many people in the game and notably in the media who were against his appointment – not on the grounds that he was not qualified to do the job but because he wasn’t an Englishman.

Not that there was a stand-out English candidate capable of sorting out the mess Steve McLaren left behind.

These are still early days, of course, but the results suggest the FA made a shrewd choice.

Veterans of 1966 have been queuing up to draw comparisons between Capello and Sir Alf Ramsey and even those who prefer not to delve too deeply into ancient history have been impressed by the way he has let everyone know that he is the boss.

Four wins out of four World Cup qualifiers and a confidence-bolstering victory in Germany – albeit in what was reduced to little more than a “second-string” friendly – is not to be sniffed at.

All we need now is for Capello to really emulate the incomparable Ramsey and guide us to World Cup glory.
