THE young man pictured fourth from the left on the front row of this photograph, J. M. (Maurice) Donkerley, was a mainstay of St Catherine’s Cricket Club in the 1938/39 season.
In fact, it was said: “Maurice’s feats of eight wickets for 16 runs against St Elizabeth’s, and six wickets for two runs against Victoria Methodists, will always be remembered, both by colleagues and opponents.” I read those words in Maurice’s obituary when, just a year after this photograph was taken, Radio Officer J. M. Donkerley, aged 20, was killed when the ship he was serving on was torpedoed.
It was the third ship he had served on — in less than a year — that had been sunk by the enemy.
The photograph was kindly brought in by Maurice’s nephew, John Patterson.
