GARY Megson knew it was only a matter of time before Johan Elmander ended his goal drought.
The Sweden international netted his first strike since the opening day of the season as Wanderers ground out an impressive 3-1 victory at Middlesbrough.
It had been eight games since the club record signing had scored – but his manager knew his patience would eventually be rewarded.
“I think Johan’s performances have pretty much personified how the team has been performing,” he said. “He has been doing well but hasn’t been getting the goals. At Middlesbrough he got the goal but his performance has been no different. Anyone who watches him with an open mind will know that.
“Johan, as all centre forwards, will be judged on the goals that he gets. But I can honestly say I have never been more pleased for a goalscorer than I was today.”
Middlesbrough had gone five games without defeat but were floored by early goals from Kevin Davies and Matty Taylor. Emanuel Pogatetz pulled one back with 13 minutes to go, but just 63 seconds later, Elmander conjured an impressive finish to seal three points.
The Swede knew on his arrival at the Reebok that he would be charged with the responsibility of being Wanderers’ main goalscorer, following the departure of Nicolas Anelka in January.
Even though the 27-year-old has found it tough since his arrival, Megson was sure his fortunes would change.
“We haven’t been crowing about it or moaning at him,” he said. “But there has been quite a lot of questioning from elsewhere on when he was going to start scoring goals.
“I look up and down the Premier League and there are an awful lot of centre forwards who cost a load more money than Johan who are not scoring either. Johan’s performances have been terrific. Whenever we have been given the opportunity to play him he plays because he gives us a great deal.”
