NOMINATIONS are being sought for this year’s Bolton Sport and Physical Activity Awards.

The Sport Health and Inclusion Service — part of Bolton Council — is running the fifth annual event in partnership with the Bolton Sport and Physical Activity Alliance.

All this means that there are plenty of dedicated individuals working hard to support the wide range of grassroots sporting organisations active in Bolton.

There are awards designed to recognise the achievements, among others, of clubs, coaches, volunteers and unsung heroes.

Letters and nomination forms have gone out all over town and praise is due for this worthwhile, encouraging exercise.

Yet one thing baffles me.

The organisers make no reference to the Spirit of Sport work of art that sits on a roundabout near the Reebok Stadium celebrating the contribution made to Bolton society by professional and amateur sports people.

It surprises me that the clever marketing folk in Bolton Council do not seem to want to make any kind of link between the awards and our eye-catching monument to sporting endeavour.

And, while I think about it, there does not seem to have been any announcement yet about the addition of Jason Kenny’s name and picture to the Spirit of Sport in recognition of his gold and silver cycling medals at the Beijing Olympics.
