THE Library Theatre has announced its Christmas show will be Neil Bartlett’s adaptation of Great Expectations.
Bartlett’s version of Oliver Twist was a hit at the theatre in 2005, and the novel of Great Expectations is regarded by many as Dickens’ greatest work.
The story reolves around young orphan Pip, whose path through life will be largely shaped by two experiences in his early years which turn out to have far-reaching consequences. Pip first has a traumatic and dramatic encounter with escaped convict Magwitch, whom he befriends.
He then meets the eccentric and capricious spinster Miss Havisham, who has never truly recovered from being ditched at the altar.
Finally Pip meets Miss Havisham’s beautiful but spiteful adopted daughter, Estella.
“Neil Bartlett’s adaptation of Dickens’ wonderful and heart-warming story is exciting and challenging,” says director Roger Haines.
The show opens on Saturday, November 29, and runs until Saturday, January 17.
