GRANTS are available to help people keep warm this winter.

NHS chiefs in Bolton are urging residents to apply for the money and insulate their homes to reduce health risks.

People who spend 10 per cent or more of their income on energy bills are in fuel poverty and are eligible for financial help, even if they do not receive benefits.

NHS Bolton is raising awareness of the help available because cold and damp can affect conditions like asthma, mental ill-health and cardiac and arthritic conditions.

Health development specialist Leesa Kahraman said: “The winter kills more people in Britain each year than in colder countries like Norway because our housing is so poorly insulated.”

Bolton’s multi-agency partnership Affordable Warmth Steering Group wants people to contact The Energy Saving Trust.

The advice centre offers impartial advice and can be contacted on 0800 512012 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
