A GROUP of have-a-go-heroes who rushed to the aid of a policewoman being attacked by a thug have been praised by a senior officer.

Sgt Paul Ellis was so impressed by the actions of the brave group, he plans to send them personal letters.

The shoppers ran to the aid of PC Janette Cahill, who was dealing with a shoplifter at the Sainsbury’s store in Trinity Street, Bolton town centre.

Witnesses said the man head-butted her in the face and knocked her to the ground during the incident at around 2.20pm on Monday.

A shop assistant went to stop him, but he threw her to one side before a male customer calmly walked up and grabbed him.

David Walker, of Morris Green, said: “He put him in an arm lock and detained him until more police arrived.”

Extra officers were called to the scene by a woman shopper, who called for help using the PC Cahill’s police radio.

Sgt Ellis said: “Incidents such as these, and the actions of those who rushed to the aid of the police officer, only seek to emphasise that society will not tolerate the minority who commit crime and disorder.

“The officers who work on behalf of this community can do so safe in the knowledge that on occasions like this, local people will provide support and assistance when it is most needed.”

PC Cahill was taken to hospital for treatment to a cut on her nose, which requires further X-rays. She is currently off work because of the attack.

Police confirmed that supermarket staff, members of the public, security staff from TK Maxx and an off-duty police officer were involved in detaining the shoplifter.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been bailed until December 23.

Sgt Ellis appealed for anyone who witnessed this incident to get in touch by calling 0161 856 5537 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
