Residents of a Bolton sheltered housing scheme say they have been left so scared after a spate of break-ins, they are barricading themselves in their flats with their own furniture.
Elderly residents of Vermont Street, off Chorley Old Road, have been victims of thieves posing as workmen.

Strikers were today warned that they will be sacked if they do not return to work by Wednesday.
The 180 employees of Henry Crossley (Packings) Ltd, of Bolton, have each received a letter containing the warning from managing director Mr Thomas Miller. They have been on strike for five weeks in a pay dispute.

A mineworker at Parkside Colliery, Newton-le-Willows, accidentaly dropped a set of false teeth down the 900ft shaft. Later they were handed to him — unbroken.
They had landed on a miner working at the bottom of the shaft.

“In self-defence I drew my truncheon,” said a police officer at Marylebone yesterday in describing the conduct of a defendant, “but there was no need to use it. I merely showed it to him and that had the desired effect.”
