WHAT a beautiful spot to live in, on the banks of Jumbles Reservoir.
However, like so many things in life, all was not sweetness and light at the Lees Cottages in 1971.
A midwife lived in one of the cottages and the Bolton Evening News story began with: “Trippers’ parked cars could prevent a Turton midwife from getting to a mother-to-be in an emergency.”
Clara Bentley, the lady at the washing line, was quoted as saying: “It hasn’t happened yet, but it could be that one of these days she will get a call to help to deliver a baby and she will be unable to get her car out of the garage.”
The other lady, walking to the line, was Lilian Haslam.
