YOUNG cyclists are geared up to take to the road after passing their proficiency test.
For the past month, children in the final year at SS Osmund and Andrew’s RC School in Breightmet have been learning about road safety for cyclists.
The cycling proficiency programme, run by Bikeright, fits in the with the school’s teaching of how to stay healthy and safe.
Headteacher John Thorpe said: “All 24 children passed the test, with some reaching the higher level.
“Not only did the course teach them about cycling safely, but also how to ensure their bicycles are roadworthy and the essential checks they should do. The children also got into the habit of wearing cycle helmets.”
Mr Thorpe said more pupils are now cycling to school, with parents saddling up alongside their children.
“Cycling keeps children healthy and reduces congestion around school,” he said.
