IT could be a scene from a Hovis advert, but it is, in fact, Church Street, Ainsworth, in 1966, although it looks like it could be the 1940s.
I have memories of Church Street and the chemist shop where I took many prescriptions when I was visiting an elderly relative in the area. And local people seemed to keep their cars for a while as the vehicle in the picture is a 1950s Ford — either the Popular or the Prefect — and behind that an A30/35 van.
Neither vehicle was exactly “cutting edge” by 1966. In the 1960s, before the mega shopping centres of today, you could have done much of your weekly shopping in Church Street, getting anything from bread and newspapers to clothes and sweets.
