A DISABLED riding school has been presented with a 150-year-old horse-drawn carriage.

Miller’s Nook Riding School, in Lostock Lane, Westhoughton, has wanted a carriage for some time.

The school teaches disabled children to ride, but owner Kath Miller wanted other youngsters, who are not able to sit on a horse, to benefit from being around the animals.

Now, Westhoughton Rotary Club has come to the rescue after member, Tom McMurray, spotted an antique carriage for sale. The club bought it and then set about restoring it to its former glory. Club president, Ron Bell, said: “I am delighted the club has found a practical way to help people with a genuine need in the community.

“It is so much more satisfying to see people benefiting first-hand.”

The carriage was presented to the school on Saturday. The presentation marked the club’s diamond jubilee.

Mr Bell added: “This opens up a new world of real pleasure to the children.

“As well as that, while the children are having riding lessons, their carers can have a much-earned treat of a ride in the carriage.”
