YOUNGSTERS in Horwich are being encouraged to take part in a training scheme to become youth workers.
Horwich Town Council is providing £3,600 from the 2009/2010 budget towards the £6,340 project.
The course, which will be based in the town, will provide up to 180 hours training, including 60 hours of placement.
It will be open to 16-to-19 year olds who live in Horwich and who can train for a NVQ Level 1: Certificate in an Introduction to Youth Work if they successfully complete the course.
Cllr Stephen Rock, leader of the town council, said: “There has been a decrease in the amount of money spent on youth services in Horwich which has led to a shortage of staff and volunteers.
“Young people at the youth club can earn a qualification whilst doing something they enjoy.
“We hope this will produce more skilled volunteers and could lead to a future career.
“Providing services for young people is money well spent.”
The scheme was presented to councillors at a council meeting by Antoinette Harrop, who works for Youth Express.
The training will give 10 young people the chance to boost their self-esteem and help with their future job prospects.
It is hoped that younger children in Horwich will eventually benefit from the training.
While the scheme will be open to all Horwich youngsters, those who have expressed an interest by volunteering in youth work will be targeted.
