THERE are many arguments as to why the domination of supermarkets is not a good thing, but it cannot be said that they do not create jobs.

There is no doubt that the expansion of the major chains has led to the closure of many small, independent stores and businesses, and removed any sense of individuality or uniqueness from this country’s High Streets.

Supermarkets are here to stay though, so the news that Tesco Extra at the Middlebrook Retail Park could soon become one of the biggest in the North-west should be welcomed.

The company already has planning permission to increase the store to 148,000 sq ft, but now wants a further expansion to take it to 171,000 sq ft.

Tesco says the increase will create 300 jobs at a time when the country is on the brink of a recession and, with the news full of stories about businesses closing and shedding jobs, this can only be good for Bolton.

The plans will also include more car parking facilities and an increase in the amount of goods available, which most shoppers will welcome.

Tesco is carrying out a public consultation before formally applying for planning permission, but if it leads to job creation and boost Bolton’s economy, we should support the move.
