I FIND myself unable to resist having another word about the Market Hall conversion that has transformed it in to a part of the Market Place development.

If you read the Your Views pages in this newspaper — everybody who cares about Bolton should do so — you will know that the vast majority of correspondents do not like the £40m project.

Their central point — that the atmosphere and usefulness of the old building has been lost — has been made over and over again and I could not agree more.

It strikes me, though, that the story does not need to end now.

I presume that the Market Place management is noting all the criticisms and considering what it can do to generate a better image.

The new space, after all, is impressive and would seem to have a great potential for accommodating all manner of small stalls — business and charity — on a permanent or temporary basis.

Maybe the idea was to get away from that sort of thing, but a recession is developing and perhaps there is scope for a rethink.

The provision of seating — as suggested by some correspondents — is another idea that deserves some consideration.

It would be good to think that the Market Place bosses will tell the town one day that they have listened to the criticisms and intend to respond as best they can.
