Wanderers boss Gary Megson reflected ruefully on a brave Wanderers performance that ended in a 2-0 Reebok defeat which briefly saw Liverpool go to the top of the Premiership table.
He said: "We gave everything we got, missed two fantastic chances, had a goal disallowed that shouldn't have been but we were culpable for both their goals."
"We didn't get in their faces in the first half.
"In the second-half we did much better but we made a couple of elementary mistakes and you have huge problems at 2-0 down against a team like that."
Che;lsea's easy 3-0 win over West Brom at The Hawthorns later saw them overtake Liverpool at the top.
It's much tougher at the bottom, with Wanderers apparently in a mid-table position from their 11th position, but the points difference between the teams below is hardly a comfort with no room for error.
