10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News November 17, 1998 The “yellow peril” of traffic wardens could disappear from the streets of Bolton, but motorists would have a greater chance of being “nicked” if they parked on yellow lines.

Bolton Council is considering applying to take over the administration of all parking offences from the police.

If it is given the go-ahead, the familiar uniforms of the traffic wardens will disappear and be replaced by council-employed enforcement officers.

25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News November 17, 1983 Fire officers are sifting evidence at Bowaters Plastics factory in Lever Street, Bolton, which was the scene of a huge blaze on Tuesday night.

The majority of the workforce are now back in the five-storey factory, although the blaze destroyed 50 per cent of the third-floor ceiling and floorboards.

50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News November 17, 1958 A plaque commemorating the voluntary work of members of the Bolton Building Trades Federation who have given up their free time to build an extension to the admission dept. at Bolton District General Hospital was unveiled by Mr. G. C. Sumner, chairman of the Bolton and District Hospital Management Committee yesterday when the extension was formally opened.

100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News November 17, 1908 Thanks are due to Mr. S. J. Armstrong and family, of Peel Hall, Little Hulton, for their kind invitation to the scholars attending various Sunday schools in the district to view the fine selection of chrysanthemums on Sunday afternoon. A large number of the scholars and teachers of the Walkden Primitive Methodist Sunday school availed themselves of the privilege and greatly appreciated it.
