PC Michael Doyle was chasing a stolen vehicle along Cleggs Lane, Little Hulton, when he spotted smoke coming from a bungalow in Brynheys Close. He broke into the house and led 78-years-old Mrs Lilian Walmsley to safety.
50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News November 14, 1958 The National Coal Board has now officially given up the idea of opencast coal mining in the Coleman’s area of Horwich. In a letter to Horwich Urban District Council the Regional Opencast Manager of the Coal Board's North-west Region says that results of prospecting in the area have been unsatisfactory.
100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News November 14, 1908 The Salford Board of Guardians have decided that short nurses are every bit as good as tall nurses. Some time ago the board, by regulation, fixed the minimum height for nurses at 5ft. 4in. and in moving the abolition of this yesterday Mr. J. Brotherton urged that the appointment of nurses should be on ability and not on inches.
