Winter is approaching and the days are getting shorter - and Bolton Advanced Motorists is giving tips to cope with driving whilst it is dark.
According to the group, it is obvious that we should be aware that our eyesight might need to be checked to ensure that we can see properly at night.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has recommended further hints for driving at night:- Make sure that lights and indicators are working and clean.
Check that our vehicle’s windows are clean and clear, that the wipers work effectively and that the screen wash bottle is filled regularly.
It’s more difficult to judge speed and distance accurately once it’s dark so we need to be sure that we can stop safely in the distance we can see – at night this may be as short as the distance lit by our headlights.
Use light from oncoming vehicles to give clues about the road ahead.
Avoid full beam headlight flashes – the other driver’s eyes will need time to re-adjust. Dazzle is dangerous.
Remember not to leave it too late to turn on the lights-other drivers need to see us.
The Bolton Group of Advanced Motorists run courses throughout the year for those members of the public who would like to develop their driving skills, increase their confidence and enjoy driving more.
