BEN Sheedy produced a superb display to reach the quarter-finals of the Senior Novice Amateur Championships.

The Withins Schools Club fighter defeated Robert Lewtas in Sunday’s regional final at Bolton’s Excel Centre to keep alive his title hopes.

The 19-year-old had ended Simon Jenkinson’s unbeaten record 24 hours earlier after a crushing 9-1 victory against the Halliwell twin, whose brother Chris had been knocked out of the competition on Tuesday night.

He then overcame his opponent from Fox ABC 6-3 in the under-10 fights showdown, and will now take on his Merseyside and Cheshire counterpart, Kirkby’s David Still, at Liverpool’s Dockers Club on Monday night.

“It was a brilliant performance,” said his coach, John Hart. “He lost the first round and it was 1-1 after the second, but in the third he just took over and thoroughly deserved to win.”

Sheedy was one of four local fighters to continue in the national championships, which were being held in Bolton for the first time. In the under-20 section, Scott Rice was also celebrating after stopping Sheedy’s club-mate, Danny Johnson, in the second round of their clash, before beating Fox’s Charlie O’Brien the following day.

The Radcliffe Dynamics ace will take on John Paul Carney, of Furs ABC, at Nantwich Civic Hall on Tuesday night.

Yasser Arif (Elite) and Josh O’Connor (Sharples) will also be in action next Monday, both having received byes into the quarter-finals.

But there was disappointment for Alex Crook (Elite), Brian Burke (Atherton Pool of Life) and Shadab Akbar (Bolton Lads and Girls), who lost their bouts.
