ANDY O’Brien has backed Matty Taylor to stay among the goals after his strike against Hull City.

Taylor, pictured, is now Wanderers’ second highest goalscorer this season with two, but is capable of reaching double figures, according to his former Portsmouth team-mate.

“He’s good to get you eight or 10 goals a season,” O’Brien said.

“He has scored some screamers thoughout his career and although he probably didn’t hit the one against Hull as cleanly as he’d like to, it went in, and he’ll take it. He’s capable of more, too.”

Wanderers’ current league position of 11th is a relative luxury compared to the lows O’Brien has experienced since signing for the club in the summer of 2007.

And the defender thought Wanderers were in for another season of struggle after an inauspicious start this time around.

“From a collective point of view the table looks a lot better now,” O’Brien told Wanderers World. “We have had two wins and two cleans sheets, which have been really important for us.

“The game is about points. A couple of weeks ago, people wanted to string us up after the Everton game.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy against Manchester City but we kept a clean sheet and got a win, then did the same against Hull.

“It has catapulted us up the league and long may that continue.”

Kevin Nolan’s return from suspension this weekend against Liverpool gives Gary Megson the dilemma of whether to stick with the four-man midfield that served him so well against Hull at the weekend.

The manager has given little away, but O’Brien says Wanderers’ form can continue regardless.

“You can talk about systems, 4-4-2 and all that, but it is about the application the players put in. It’s a results game and from a defensive point of view it is good to keep clean sheets but as long as the team wins, that’s the most important thing.”
