Today’s photograph was found by The Bolton News librarian Kathryn Lynn.
On the surface it is a rather pleasant view, from perhaps the 1950s, of the junction of Trinity Street, Bradshawgate, Manchester Road and Bridgeman Place.
However, on the left, is the building known as the Pelso Works, which was destroyed by fire in July this year.
Following the fire Beryl Heyes wrote to Looking Back. She said: “Established in 1885, J Parker Ellison Ltd, (Pelso Works) were manufacturers in nursery goods and the originators of the Karri-Kot, which was the first soft-bodied pram that could be collapsed to put into cars. The company was one of the oldest and largest companies in Bolton and highly respected in the nursery goods world. Their products were used by our royal family as well as royalty abroad.
“J Parker Ellison Ltd were also enamellers and wholesalers of carpets. They occupied another building in Saville Street.
“My father, Earnest Neville Thompson, who died in 2001, was the nephew of Wilfred Ellison, the son of John Parker Ellison, and my mother Ella Thompson and I are the only surviving relations that were employed there.”
