In 1966, Wyn Davies did not want to leave Bolton Wanderers for Newcastle United, “But I didn’t have a choice,” he said when he popped into our office the other day.
Given the fact that in retrospect the transfer was good for his footballing career, there were plenty of fans who did not want him to go either.
Wyn has loaned this photograph — he has only just seen it himself for the first time after it was given to him by an old fan. “That’s my Austin 1100. I don’t know who stuck the banner on it, but will you look at the hairstyles, the winkle-picker shoes and the old rattles,” he said. “And, on the far right you can see the old corner shop on Manchester Road.” The transfer is water under the bridge now, and Wyn felt that some of the fans on the picture might enjoy seeing themselves from all those years ago.
