Having spent a lot of time with my own Meccano set as a youngster I have some idea of what went into this creation.
The Bolton Evening News in November, 1974, reported: “Nearly 1,500 parts, not counting the nuts and bolts, went into Ian Perrins’ working model of a giant crane.
“It took Ian, of Ainsworth Lane, Bolton, 150 hours to build, and weighs about 75lb.”
It was not known how many Meccano sets Ian had to buy to get all the bits needed to put it all together, but I remember I had to buy a second set in order to build a Ferris wheel many years ago.
What I would really like to know — and I’m hoping a reader will be able to help out here — is what happened to the model after this picture was taken.
Surely, it can’t still exists, gathering dust in a large cupboard somewhere?
How could anyone possibly start taking it to pieces again?
