PLANS to build a new children’s play area have been put on hold — because local people do not want it.
Play equipment on grass land close to Little Brow in Bromley Cross was removed two weeks ago because it was deemed old and unsafe.
The council was planning to replace it with new play equipment, but the scheme has now been put on hold because residents at an area forum meeting said they did not want it.
Local people who live close to the former play area claimed the site attracted yobs and that they were glad to see it closed down.
Residents opposed to the plan also say the land, known as Brick Back, is historically registered as a village green and should be left untouched.
Cllr Alan Wilkinson said: “The intention was to refurbish and renew the equipment with new items but a lot of the residents are saying they don’t want the swings.
“They also say that because it’s designated a village green and it shouldn’t have equipment on it.”
He added: “I think its up to the residents to decide what to do. They’re the ones who have got to live with it.”
Council bosses have now delayed the replacement of the play area until officers can hold a public meeting with residents to discuss what should be done.
A date has yet to be set for the meeting.
A council spokesman said: "We are aware of residents' concerns following a recent area forum and work at the site has been suspended pending a public meeting which is being organised.
“At this meeting we will be happy to talk to residents and ward councillors and there will be an opportunity to discuss the evidence gathered from other recently refurbished play areas in the borough."
