A GROUP of dads and friends walked 28 miles across the Yorkshire Dales’ Three Peaks in just 12 hour — to help a Cub pack.
Ian Bromley, Steve Roper, David Galvin and Dave Mangall, all from Westhoughton, were joined by friends Paul Delargy and Barry Unsworth, to take part in the Three Peaks Challenge.
They climbed the hills of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough and raised £1,200 for the Bolton 33rd Cub Scouts, based at St George’s Primary School in Daisy Hill.
Ian Bromley, aged 42, one of the leaders, said: “We needed to raise some funds to buy new equipment for the cubs and beavers. Parents already pay £2.50 per child in subs and if you have more than one child the total can soon add up. So we didn’t want to ask them to contribute any more.
“Instead, we decided to do a charity walk. I had walked the Three Peaks before so I suggested doing the walk.”
The group camped overnight on Saturday and set off at 6.15am on Sunday, climbing a total height of 2,153 ft and taking 59,500 steps.
Mr Bromley, of Highbury Close, Westhoughton, said: “It was really tough. I got to about half way through and didn’t want to walk any further. It didn’t help that we took a slightly different route which added a few miles onto the trip.
“We only stopped for a maximum of 10 minutes at a time throughout the walk. But looking back, I think we’d all agree that our aching legs and blisters were worth it.”
The group now hopes to spend the cash on new tents for the Cubs.
Do you know an organisation that desperately needs funds?
