SLIMMERS made sure staying well was on the menu as they took part in The BIG Bolton Health Check.

Members of Weight Watchers took part in the simple 10- minute assessment to determine their risk of developing heart disease in the next decade.

Health trainers travelled to Bolton Arena to test people during one of the slimming club’s meetings.

Weight Watchers leader Sarah Suthers has taken part in The BIG Bolton Health Check, which aims to test 46,000 people before March, next year.

Miss Suthers, aged 34, has herself battled with her weight for the last 17 years.

Three years ago, after her father, Geoff, suffered a massive heart attack, Miss Suthers was determined to be more healthy and now has a healthy Body Mass Index.

She said: “Since my father had his heart attack he has had to have a triple bypass.

“He wasn’t a typical candidate for heart disease and it was a massive shock to my family and a huge wake-up call for me.

“I have been told I’m susceptible to hereditary heart problems so I’m extremely conscious of cholesterol and diet.

“It’s frightening to think it took such a horrific incident for me to respect my health but that’s why The BIG Bolton Health Check is so important.”

So far, more than 13,000 people have had the health assessment since June and 25 per cent have been found to be at high risk of developing heart disease, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes, in the next 10 years.

The BIG Bolton Health Check takes just 10 minutes and includes a blood pressure test, a cholesterol check and a few simple lifestyle questions.

People do not need to visit their GP surgery to have the health check.

Health trainers are visiting a variety of locations around the borough, including supermarkets, barbers, DIY stores, betting shops and pubs.
