An out-of-sorts Leigh Genesis suffered their third defeat in five games as Steve Bleasdale’s side failed to capitalise on a promising start, beaten 2-1 at Worksop Town.

Leigh should have taken the lead in the opening minutes, but Brad Maylett struck a weak shot which was comfortably cleared off the line.

Although Leigh’s Darren Mansaram had the first chance of the second half, firing over the crossbar after some neat footwork on the edge of the area, it was Worksop who took the lead on 53 minutes when a right wing cross was headed in by Matt Wilson, the ball creeping past Leigh goalkeeper Steve Dickinson at the back post.

Leigh got themselves back on level terms on 75 minutes with a moment of true quality from Mansaram.

Instead of providing the impetus that Leigh needed to go on and clinch the game, it took Worksop just five minutes to reclaim the lead.

After the original shot was blocked by Jerome Fitzgerald, Town substitute Kirk Jackson swept the rebound past Dickinson.

Meanwhile, Kyle Wilson inspired FC United to a convincing 3-1 victory against Whitby Town.

The striker smashed a brilliant hat-trick as the Rebels sealed three valuable points against the league’s bottom club at Gigg Lane.

Wilson fired the hosts in front on 13 minutes, only for Town to hit back before half-time.

But the former England Under-19s hitman struck again on 66 minutes to restore FC’s advantage, and his third – and sixth of the season – two minutes later wrapped up the points.
