10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News August 29, 1998 Undercover officers will soon be checking out Bolton’s clubs for “chill out” areas to protect youngsters taking drugs.
They will be making sure that, at dance venues, there is: plenty of water for youngsters to drink; strict monitoring of temperatures and air quality; cool rest areas.
25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News August 30, 1983 Residents of 16 houses on Middlebrook Drive, Lostock, are to be consulted before Bolton Council decides whether to re-number their homes. The re-numbering of numbers 89-107 and 94-104 has been requested by Barratts, the builders.
50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News August 29, 1958 The Vicar of St. Thomas’s Church, Radcliffe, the Rev. J. R. Smith, and the verger, Mr. Arnold Porter, began a two-day vigil outside the church to-day, receiving small gifts from passers-by.
They will stay on duty until to-morrow evening by which time they hope to have collected £250.
100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News August 29, 1908 During a thunderstorm at Blackburn yesterday the Syke Mill, occupied by Messrs. Oddie at Belthorn, was struck by lightning. The current travelled down a chimney, dislodging some top bricks and smashing the lightning conductor in two places. It then entered a weaving shed at one corner and passed along diagonally to the opposite end.
