In 1979 there was a town crier competition on a wet day in Bolton.
The caption for this picture read: “The two winners going through the marks with the judges and organiser of the festival. From left: Michael Allen, Graham Kay, Tom Ashton, one of the judges, Colin Johnson and Dennis Priestley, the second judge.”
The report added: “It just wasn’t the weather for town crier competitions. Rain sent curious onlookers scurrying for shelter and water dripped steadily from each side of the official three-cornerd hat. When it fell it joined more rain soaking into the official script, and before long the majestic pronouncement was totally illegible.”
