The caption for this atmospheric photograph reads: “Built in the 1790s when it was surrounded by green meadows and an orchard, Bolton’s Commercial Hotel became a popular eating and drinking centre for the crowds who flocked to the market and travelling fairs held just outside its porticoed entrance. "Owned by Brandwoods at the time this shot was taken in the early years of the 20th century, it was taken over by Magee Marshall and later Greenall Whitley. "Despite numerous protests it was demolished in 1972 and became the site for Mothercare. "During its early days it was the headquarters for many local societies and was frequently used as a centre for political meetings.”
