A road described as “notoriously bad” for accidents has been called a matter of life and death by local councillors.

Chew Moor Lane in Westhoughton was discussed at the full council meeting last Wednesday (November 27) at Bolton Town Hall.

The road has previously been likened to "a racetrack” by councillors despite speed limits of 20mph.

Addressing the council, Cllr Martin Tighe, who represents Westhoughton said: “Chew Moor Lsn is notoriously bad for speeding.

“Speed restrictions have been put on it in the past, but anyone who lives on or near the road knows how bad it is.

“Cars often speed down Chew Moor Lane. The residents that live on it, and on the roads off it, have raised how dangerous this road is for years.

“I’m sure all of us here offer our thoughts and prayers to the family of the man who died.

“Now we need to take action to prevent further accidents, it is a matter of life and death.”

Cllr Tighe asked the executive cabinet member, Cllr Akhtar Zaman, who represents Queens Park and Central, whether he would be willing to sit down and come up with a better safety strategy for drivers and pedestrians along Chew Moor Lane.

Cllr Zaman said: “This was a tragic incident and I’m sure all of the members would want to join you in offering their condolences to the victim’s family.

“In response to your question, I can confirm the executive cabinet member and the officer team would be very happy to meet with you to discuss a strategy for drivers along this road.

“I should also note that this year the GMCA will approve the Vision Zero road safety strategy, the aim being to eliminate road death and life-changing injuries by 2040.

“Officers in our highways division will be developing an action plan which supports the adoption across Greater Manchester of the safe system approach ensuring that people, vehicles and road infrastructure interact in a way that secures a high level of safety for all.”
