Across the UK, there are several National Trust properties you can visit for a walk or a look around, ideal for a winter day out.

If you’re looking for somewhere new to explore that isn’t too far from Bolton, look no further as we’ve rounded up some of the properties you can visit near the town.

From John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney's childhood homes to Dunham Massey, there really is plenty to see and do and you can travel there by car within less than an hour and 30 minutes.

Quarry Bank Mill

Location: Quarry Bank, Styal Road, Styal, Wilmslow, SK9 4HP

Just a 45-minute drive from Bolton, you can explore Quarry Bank Mill plus enjoy perusing the bookshop, have a bite to eat in the café or have a winter picnic.

There is also a restaurant, shop and a play area for children. You can also book a tour for the Apprentice House and The Workers Cottage on arrival at the Visitor Reception.

Quarry Bank Mill gives visitors an insight into what it was like to work there and you can visit the mill owner’s house.

You can also learn about how the child apprentices lived, what they ate and how they relaxed after a day of work.

It’s important to note that this National Trust site is only partially open on some days in December but it can be fully explored for most of the month.

Dunham Massey

Location: Woodhouse Lane, Altrincham, WA14 4SJ

Take a stroll through the winter gardens or shop everything from plants to books at Dunham Massey.

You can tuck into lunch at the restaurant or stop by the café for refreshments. You can also take a leisurely stroll through the parkland and get some fresh winter air.

It’s important to note that this National Trust site is only partially open on some days throughout December, January, February and March – you can see up to date opening times on the National Trust website.

The house is currently closed for the winter.

Little Moreton Hall

Location: Newcastle Road, Congleton, Cheshire, CW12 4SD

While Little Moreton Hall is currently “closed for winter conservation”, it will reopen on selected dates in December for its Deck the Hall Christmas event.

It will be open from December 6-8, 13-15 and 20-22. It closes for the entirety of January before opening on most days in February.

You can wander through the Tudor house, enjoy the gardens and go across the surrounding moat.

While the tea rooms offer a nice stop for refreshments during your visit and you can also have a look inside the bookshop which sells second-hand books.

Tatton Park

Location: Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 6QN

You can visit the house at Tatton Park or explore the 40-acre farm and say hello to the rare breed animals. Visitors can see demonstrations on the farm too.

Explore the 50 acres of gardens, the walled kitchen garden and the 100-year-old Japanese garden while you’re there.

Look out for wildlife in the 1,000-acre deer park while enjoying a walk or cycle. This is also a spot where you can enjoy wintery picnics.

There are also plenty of opportunities to do some shopping or grab something to eat.

It’s important to note that this National Trust site is only partially open on most days throughout December and it will close on selected dates too – the same goes for January and February. You can see up to date opening times on the National Trust website.

The National Trust added: “Parkland vehicle entry charge applies seasonally to all visitors, including National Trust members. Farm entry charges also apply to NT members.”

Location: Woolton and Allerton, Liverpool

Music fans can see where it all began for The Beatles as the National Trust allows visits to the musicians’ childhood homes.

Make sure to check the updated opening times as the childhood homes are not always available to visit but there is plenty of opportunity during the winter.

Explore the childhood home of John Lennon which has been left just as it was when he was living there with his Aunt Mimi in the 1950s.

You can also visit Sir Paul McCartney’s childhood home which is “smaller and plainer” than Lennon’s former abode, according to the National Trust. However, visitors can expect to see lots of memories from the band’s early days.
