A councillor is calling for change after a subway under Kearsley Roundabout has flooded "for decades" during "extreme rainfall" – most recently after Storm Bert.

It filled with water after Storm Bert hit on Saturday (November 23), causing  flooding from Bolton to Bury.

Cllr Sylvia Crossley, who represents Kearsley ward, has said it has flooded repeatedly  during any "extreme rainfall".

The latest flooding was reported to Bolton Council to make sure the gullies are cleared out.

And Cllr Crossley is demanding change. But it is understood a lasting fix would have "huge costs".

Cllr Crossley said: "Frustratingly, the flooded subway at Kearsley roundabout is an historic issue going back decades, with many generations having been inconvenienced by this issue over the years.

"The council have pumped the water out previously, and the issue regretfully reoccurs.

"We've reported this current flooding to the council to ensure that all the gullies are clear and continue to be cleared.

"If the roundabout was being built now, I'm sure the drainage would be done differently.

"It's understood that the huge costs that would be involved has always been the stumbling block to any lasting fix.”

And other Kearsley areas have faced repeated flooding.

Still, Cllr Crossley has praised recent efforts to improve Kearsley Roundabout.

She said: "The wider environment of Kearsley Roundabout has much improved in recent years, with the dedication of community and volunteer litter pickers - clearing rubbish, edging paths and planting spring bulbs.

"The council has been supportive and helps to maintain these improvements.”

Ramsbottom and Bury were also hit by severe flooding during Storm Bert.

Abbey Village, near Chorley, saw Bolton Road closed because of rising water levels.
