An investigation is under way as to how a bus crashed into a bridge labelled as "low".

The incident occurred this morning at around 10am - when reports came in of a Bee Network double-decker stuck under a bridge on Weston Street in Bolton.

It has since emerged that the bus was not in service and no injuries occurred.

However, at least five windows were shattered from the collision.

Trains were still in operation during the incident.

Stephen Rhodes, director of bus at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: "At around 10am today, we received reports that a Bee Network bus had collided with a bridge on Weston Street in Bolton.

(Image: NQ) “The bus was not in service at the time and there were no passengers on board. We’ve been advised that the driver was not hurt.

“The road has now reopened and the bus safely removed. TfGM will be investigating the circumstances of the collision with the operator.”

A fire and rescue cordon was in place shortly after the vehicle got stuck.

Traffic then backed up as it wasn't clear to drivers turning onto the road that it was blocked.

A small crowd gathered to watch the large vehicle be pulled from under the structure - which fortunately isn't listed.

A HGV driver on the scene said: "I don't know how this has happened as all large vehicles have the maximum clearance visible in the cabin.

"I should know as an HGV driver, it's even more clear in passenger-carrying vehicles."
