An elderly man has died after a car went into flood waters this weekend. 

Police were called to an incident at waters around Cockhill Lane in Foulridge on Saturday, when the region was being battered by Storm Bert.

Officers helped a man in his 80s from the water but have now said that the man has since been pronounced dead in hospital.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “At 4:16pm yesterday November 23 we received a report of a car entering a body of water on Cockhill Lane, Foulridge, Colne.

“Our officers, along with colleagues from the other emergency services attended, and a man in his 80s was recovered from the water.

“Very sadly, he was later pronounced dead at hospital. 

“Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this incredibly distressing time.

“A woman in her 80s was also taken to hospital. 

“Thankfully, her condition is not life threatening.

"The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be passed to the coroner in due course.” 

Storm Bert caused widespread disruption across the region over the course of this weekend with flooding reported in many areas around Lancashire.

Members of the public have been urged to always call 999 in the event of an emergency.
