A garage and roof cavity were destroyed in a house fire which broke out in the early hours. 

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Lulworth Drive, Hindley Green, at just before 3am today, Sunday. 

The fire, which is believed to have started in the garage, had spread to the house's roof, but firefighters stopped it from spreading to the adjoining property. 

Watch manager Nigel Shepherd of Hindley station said: "We were called to a property Lulworth Drive in Hindley Green at 2.57am. 

"Appliances from Hindley, Wigan and Atherton stations attended. The fire originated in the garage of a semi-detached bungalow. 

"By he time we got there garage was well alight and had started to spread into the attic void of the bungalow.

"The family had self rescued prior to fire service arrival. Six firefighters went into the property wearing breathing apparatus went in to rescue family pet dog."

He added: "The dog was fine, it was found quite quickly and made a full recovery. 

"The fire was so intense that it caused a gas leak and we couldn't isolate the electrical supply so Cadent gas engineers and electrical engineers attended the incident. 

"They dug into the ground and isolated the gas and electrical supply. Police and paramedics attended the incident, the paramedics checked on the family as they had inhaled smoke, but they were checked at the scene and were okay. 

"The garage and the roof void were destroyed by the fire and the rest of the property was badly smoke damaged."

Firefighters also intervened in time to stop the fire from spreading to the adjoining property. 

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
