A Bolton open mic night is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

The Buskers Ball, which is believed to be 'arguably the first open mic night in the North West', will mark the occasion with a special event at Prince Billy's on Bradshawgate on Sunday, November 24, from 3pm.

The event will feature performances from special guests, as well as being an open mic night.

Buskers Ball 'supremo' Alec Martin said: "When we began three decades ago at Oscars Cafe Bar in Bolton, we never really thought the open mic scene would have grown to the extent that it is now.

"At the time, there was nowhere really for acoustic musicians to get up and play bar folk music clubs, and the music policy at these clubs was very 'folk music' orientated.

"We provided an evening where such musicians could get up and do their own thing, be it self-penned music or chart hits, mainly with acoustic guitars."

Since starting, many performers who began at the Buskers Ball have gone on to play semi-professionally, with at least one achieving 'international stardom.'

Over the years, the Buskers Ball has organised several national songwriting competitions, released a compilation CD featuring regular performers, and Mr Martin himself has published a book, 'The Art of the Open Mic'.

The 30th birthday celebration welcomes everyone, old and new, promising to be an 'excellent musical event.'

As Alec says, "There definitely won't be a 40th!"

Performance slots are filling up quickly, so anyone wishing to take part should book a spot via the Buskers Ball Facebook page, although they will work hard to fit everyone in.
