A man from Bolton hit the mother of his children over the head with a heavy object in a "frightening" attack.

Callum Taylor, aged 31, turned up "drunk" at the woman's house in Bolton on April 8.

Taylor, of Green Way, Hall i' th' Wood, was trying to make her drive him somewhere, but she refused.

He proceeded to hit her in the face "with the back of his hand", as well as grabbing her hair and "hitting her on the back of the head with something heavy".

He appeared at Bolton Crown Court to be sentenced for his crimes.

Rachel Faux, defending, said: "At every hearing I have been at, the defendant has been supported by a significant number of his family members.

"It presents a different side to Callum Taylor which isn't reflected in criticisms in the pre-sentence report."

She said how a job was available for him upon release from prison and also highlighted his guilty plea.

Ms Faux added: "It is clear from his grandmother's reference that he is somebody, as the eldest sibling of five, who has had responsibilities in difficult circumstances for his younger siblings such as changing nappies and caring for them.

Sentencing, Recorder Alexandra Simmonds said: "You fall to be sentenced for assault occasioning actual bodily harm on April 8 this year against your former partner, you have two young children together.

"You were not cohabiting at the time and you phoned her in a drunk state, wanting a lift somewhere. She refused and you turned up at her house.

"She refused to give you a lift or let you borrow her car. You became nasty verbally about her in front of your children.

"You hit her to the face with the back of your hand. The fight then continued upstairs, where you held her hair before hitting her on the back of the head with something heavy, causing a wound to the top of her head and a scratch to her face."

She added: "You still refused to leave the house and then forced her to drive you to various locations, including to the supermarket before dropping you at your mother's house.

"We have not had the benefit of a victim personal statement, but no doubt the injuries you caused were unpleasant and frightening for her.

"You are 31 and have 26 previous convictions for offences including violence, criminal damage and domestic violence."

Recorder Simmonds said it is "concerning" that Taylor "struggles" to accept responsibility for his actions and instead blames the complainant.

She also referred to the probation report placing him at a "high risk" of committing further offences against the complainant and his mother and sister.

Recorder Simmonds sentenced him to 54 weeks imprisonment. However, because he had already served almost seven months on remand, he will be released from prison.

A restraining order was also granted on the victim's home for a year.
