Right, it's coat season. So sod the summer bod.

The autumn and winter seasons are perhaps my favourite time of year for several reasons. The dark nights, the miserable weather and the food, to name a few.

Just picture the scene. You've gone on a long hike through the mountains and hills in the pouring rain (cosplaying as a vampire from Twilight) and arrive at a pub with a roasting fire and a consoling menu.

What could lift this hungry goth's spirits even further? Wine.

For me, this is the perfect scenario, but I'm aware it's not always feasible. We're not all blessed to have marauding mountains on our doorstep, nor are we all lucky enough to have charming independent inns with roaring fires around the corner.

No, for most of us, we have a local park with overflowing bins and a Wetherspoons. Not my idea of fun.

So how do you recreate that cosy autumn feeling at home? Aldi appears to have the answer.

"Forget the winter chills! Aldi’s new wine collection is bursting with rich reds perfect for cosy nights by the fire, crisp whites to elevate hearty meals, and festive fizz guaranteed to add sparkle to any occasion," They said.

"This year, discover hidden gems from renowned wine regions and uncover new favourites, with over 85% of the collection priced under £10 a bottle."

Personally, I'm a red wine kind of man. For years now I've always associated red with winter and white with summer, very basic I know, but this was all about to change.

Aldi was kind enough to send me four bottles of completely different bottles all recommended by wine experts. Here is what I found:

Specially Selected Chianti Reserva (£7.75, 75cl)

I'll start with what I know. As the nights draw in, gathering around the fireplace with a glass of red is the ultimate cure for any ailment.

With the Chianti Reserva, each sip felt like a warm embrace.

Crafted from Sangiovese grapes grown in the rolling hills of Tuscany, this wine was aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 24 months, resulting in a smooth texture and enticing smoky notes.

Flavours of ripe cherry, raspberry, and vanilla intertwine with a hint of spice.

I highly recommend it, not a bad price either.

Unearthed French Caladoc Rosé (£9.99, 75cl)

I am far from a Rosé type of bloke so approached this one slightly sceptical, especially after noticing the £9.99 price tag.

It was intriguing, to say the least. A unique blend of Grenache and Malbec grapes from the sun-drenched Languedoc region had me questioning all my previous notions of Rosé and took me by complete surprise.

I refused to do what my mum does and add ice cubes, I'm not a sinner, I wanted it to speak for itself. And so it sang.

Pale pink and bursting with freshness, it offers delicate notes of red and white fruits (think raspberries and white peaches) with a whisper of red cherry on the finish.

Serve chilled with a comforting autumn salad or a festive cheese board.

“Make sure you stock up in time for Christmas!”. “Make sure you stock up in time for Christmas!”.  (Image: Newsquest) Aldi’s Specially Selected Crémant du Jura (£10.99, 75cl)

This was recommended by social media influencer, @partnerinwineuk who called this fizz “the real Laurent Perrier champagne dupe," and added, “make sure you stock up in time for Christmas!”.

Prosecco, champagne, cava, chardonnay, sparkling white wines have never done it for me. But could Aldi finally sway me?

No, sadly. However, I think this is down in part to the reviewer.

Myself and prosecco-like fizzes have always had an acrimonious relationship. They just don't do it for me, so instead I got a friend to test it.

Scummy Jimmy said: "This was the winner for me. A delicious wine that tasted like we were celebrating a major milestone. I'll be making sure to stock up on this one."

If you can't trust scummy Jimmy, who can you trust?

And finally, we come to my favourite type of summer drink. A white wine.

Never in my 29 years have I associated white wine with autumn or winter, but my god, this wine was transformative.

“If you like really crisp refreshing white wines this is the one, I’m telling you”, said @TheWineWally.

Unlike the other wines - which I shared - I became Father Jack after one glass of this. It was arguably one of the nicest whites I've ever had.

Perfect alongside a warming winter seafood feast, it’s the ultimate choice for those who crave crisp, clean flavours.

Aldi is certainly serving up a storm of delicious wines for you this autumn, go have a try yourself.
