A road in Ainsworth was closed after emergency repairs have taken place due to a gas leak.

Bury and Bolton Road was shut at its junctions with Starling Road, Higher Ainsworth Road and Bradley Fold Road.

The incident happened near business Travis Perkins and the Toby Carvery restaurant.

Gas network Cadent said the incident "appears to be the result of third-party damage" to one of its gas mains but "everything is under control".

There was "no risk to gas supply to the local area", the operator added.

Diversions were put in place and those travelling were asked to plan their route and allow extra time for their journeys.

Traffic system Inrix said: “A58 Bury New Road both ways closed, heavy traffic due to emergency repairs from B6292 Higher Ainsworth Road to Bradley Fold Road.”

Head of customer operations at Cadent, Phil Hendrick, said: "We are dealing with an incident which appears to be the result of third-party damage to one of our gas mains.

"Everything is under control and, at present, there is no risk to gas supply to the local area.

"In order to deal with this safely, we have had to close the road to traffic.

"We know that's not ideal, but I hope people understand that safety is paramount.

"We are currently assessing the extent of the damage and the nature of the repair that will be required.

"It's important to stress, in an incident like this, that you should always ring the gas emergency service on 0800 111 999 if you smell gas.

"Do not assume it is related to this incident - it may not be and needs to be checked."
