Bolton will fall silent on Sunday to remember the great sacrifice made for today's freedom.

Remembrance services will be taking place across the borough.

Civic leaders will gather in Victoria Square on Sunday at 10.55am for the traditional act of Remembrance led by the Vicar of Bolton, Revd Hannah Lane. 

The Hoover Band will play, as will the Shree Muktajeevan Swamibapa Pipe Band. 

Among those laying wreaths include the Mayor of Bolton, Andy Morgan, and the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Four schools representing the town will be there as well, Markland Hill Primary, Beaumont Primary, Rumworth Special and Ladybridge High.

The service is expected to end at around 12.15-12.30pm. 

There will also be an Armistice Day service on Monday, November 11 at 11am on Victoria Square. Again led by the Vicar of Bolton, it will last for 15 minutes. 

Cllr Morgan said: "As Mayor of Bolton and an army veteran myself, I know it would really be appreciated by those that have served, and continue to service, and their families, if as many of the public turnout and attend one of the Remembrance Services planned across the borough to honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, their lives for our freedom.

"Together, we can ensure that their courage and commitment is never forgotten."

Astley Bridge 

Remembrance display in Astley BridgeRemembrance display in Astley Bridge (Image: Public) There will be a short, non-denominational service at Astley Bridge Cemetery at 11am on Monday, November 11. The service will be about remembrance, with an "emphasis" on those buried in Astley Bridge Cemetery. 

Remembrance displays have been created at Andrew Lane.

Cllr Hilary Fairclough said: "I believe that Astley Bridge goes above and beyond, it’s a real community event, we raise lots of money for the Royal British Legion by getting sponsors for poppy on a lamppost, local residents and councillors spend many hours putting up the poppies which really marks the importance of remembrance. 

"We also have a number of displays at Andrew Lane which are outstanding, one such display is made by the very talented owner of Classy Wrap, a local boutique on Sharples Avenue.

"This display even has lighting which gives it a really poignant feel in the darker nights." 

Lynn Elcoat, owner of Classy Wrap, said: "We do a display at Andrew Lane for our local community and also one out side our shop. 

"We see lots of people coming to see the displays, from individuals, families with their children, the local nurseries and carers bringing the elderly round. It really is a pleasure to do these displays. 

"We feel its really important that the people who made huge sacrifices for us are never forgotten." 

 

Blackrod

Blackrod's Remembrance Sunday parade will start at 2pm on Sunday, November 10, from Bens at the Legion on Manchester Road and will then move across the road to the chapel at Blackrod Cemetery, where a service will be held. 

The parade will then continue up to St Katharine's Church, where another service will take place. 

 

Farnworth

Remembrance Day in Farnworth, 2018 (Image: Phil Taylor) Remembrance Sunday, will be marked at Farnworth Central Park with a parade down Market Street, with a service to be held opposite Farnworth Library. 

Times have not yet been confirmed.

 

Horwich

A Remembrance parade will take place through the centre of Horwich on Remembrance Sunday. 

The parade will assemble on Ramsbottom Road outside Horwich RMI Club at 11.30am and depart at 11.40am. 

It will travel up Ramsbottom Road, Victoria Road, Church Street, Lee Lane and onto Lever Park Avenue for a service at the Garden of Remembrance at 12.15pm. The parade will then return to the RMI via Chorley New Road. 

 

Kearsley

Kearsley will also hold a Remembrance Sunday parade. It will meet at Kearsley Cricket Club on Springfield Road at 9am, before starting the march at 9.30am. 

It will march to the war memorial on Manchester Road, led by the Kearsley Youth Brass Band. 

There will then be a laying of wreaths, a two minute silence and prayers at the Cenotaph. It will then proceed to Kearsley Mount Methodist Church for a short service at 10.15am, finishing with another two minute silence at 11am.

Little Lever

A service will take place at the memorial, delivered by the vicar of St Matthew's Church, Little Lever. Councillors have brought in a speaker system to ensure that everyone will be able to hear. 

Times have yet to be confirmed but it is believed it will take place at a similar time to previous years, when the marches have started at 10.30am. 

This comes after cross-party councillors came together to put up displays in the area. 

Cllr David Meehan said: "While we don't agree on some things politically, as a group of three councillors we can always work together for the betterment of our residents."

 

Stoneclough

There will also be a Remembrance Sunday event at Ringley Old Bridge in Stoneclough at 10.30am. 

A poppy waterfall and Remembrance arch has been installed. Carrs pasty and peas will be served after the event as well. 

A Candlelight of Remembrance service will also take place in the evening, at 6pm. 

 

Westhoughton

Lee Hill at last year's Westhoughton parade (Image: Public) Westhoughton's Remembrance Sunday parade will convene at 9.20am at St Bartholomew's CE Primary before departing at 9.40am, heading towards the Parish Church of St Bartholomew. 

There will be a service at the church at 10am, with the procession then going to the War Memorial at the junction of Market Street and Church Street, where there will be a service and laying of wreaths at 11am. 

At 11.15am, the parade will go along Church Street, right along Lord Street, left up The Avenue, right along Central Drive, right down Bolton Road and right along Market Street and Wigan Road to St Bartholomew’s C.E. Primary School. 

Daisy Hill FC's manager, Lee Hill, will lead the Westhoughton parade as Parade Marshal. 

A Westhoughton native, Lee spent 22 years enlisted in the army, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Royal Engineers, and after being an active participant in the town’s Remembrance events for a number of years, he is now finalising preparations to lead the parade on Sunday. 

He said: "The previous marshal stepped down, and Pauline Rowley, the Westhoughton Town Clerk, asked me if I would take over the role as I’ve been involved in the parade for the past few years. 

"I was very happy to accept, and I’m very pleased to be taking the lead in the Remembrance parade in my home town."
