A Bolton pub that banned Prime Minister Keir Starmer over a proposed outdoor smoking ban says he is still barred despite the plans getting axed.

The Griffin on Great Moor Street said they would "chuck out" Sir Keir if he dared to enter the town centre establishment and purchase one of their £2.50 pints.

While landlady Paula Crompton is glad the Prime Minister has "come to his senses", the government has been dealt a further blow as Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, is now also banned due to "guilt by association".

Paula added: "I'm happy about the plans getting axed as banning outdoor smoking would be disastrous for our pub.

Sit Keir may have had hopes of getting in The Griffin's good books after it was announced in Wednesday's budget that draught beer duty will be cut by 1.7 per cent, making everyone's pints 1p cheaper.

Paula said: "That's not really going to make much difference though is it, it will change absolutely nothing overall.

"Even with the 40 per cent reduction on business rates for pubs, that will still leave us worse off than last year."

“If they can’t go out into the beer garden, they won’t come in.

“We’re losing our pub culture as it is, where are they going to go for a cigarette?”

Labour considered the ruling to relieve the “burden” smoking-related illnesses put on the NHS, it would have extended to small parks, and areas outside hospitals, nightclubs and sports venues.

However, the ban was ruled out this week, sparking celebrations for many smokers across the country.
